A Batizado (baptism)

This is a key event in Capoeira. Its aim is to show the student that they are a big part of the group where they will train and also a big part of the Capoeira community.

Everyone forms a big circle and the beginner plays with a master or invited teacher, who gives them a corda (belt) at the end of the game.

This corda represents their first graduation and, if they continue training they will gain others, in similar ceremonies, as time moves on.

This is a way for the master to recognise the effort and dedication put in by the student.
